The Birkin bag of Hermes is the first it bag bearing the name of a celebrity. In 1983, Hermes CEO Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Birkin placed her straw travelling bag in the overhead compartment, but the contents fell to the deck. She then explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she liked. Dumas then drew sketches on an airplane sick bag and after many drafts, revealed the final design in 1984.
